The architecture of the building was designed in the style of an old Roman market hall with a basilica built in 1894-1896 at the foot of the Elbe. The fish auction hall served to maintain and develop the city's fish trade, but was almost completely destroyed after the Second World War. Gradually it fell into disrepair and it was decided to demolish it, but plans to preserve it as a monument prevailed. The domed roof was restored and the facade redecorated. The brick building has been a listed building since 1984 and today serves as a cultural center with a number of restaurants and shops, but also as a reminder of the Hamburg fishing industry.
