Almost 100 years ago, the Chilehaus was to Hamburg what the Elbphilharmonie is to Hamburg today. A modern, unusual building, gigantic in size for its time, reminiscent of an ocean liner. The high walls made of dark earthenware bricks are reminiscent of the bow of a ship, the railing and the terrace floors are reminiscent of a ship's deck lined with countless cabin windows. This pre-war 20th-century Expressionist building takes its name from a wealthy merchant who made his fortune doing business in Chile.
A three-color risograph by artist Filip Zierfuss shows this UNESCO-protected landmark up close.
